One of the largest cities in the world in 1500, Aztec Tenochtitlan—known today as Mexico City—was reportedly destroyed by Spanish conquistadors. But was it really? This lecture turns to indigenous sources on the city and reveals that the “death” of the city was a myth. What the Spanish proclaimed as their colonial capital was, in fact, a vibrant Aztec city through the sixteenth century. This Lecture by Barbara Mundy, art historian at Fordham University, and author of The Death of Aztec Tenochtitlan, the Life of Mexico City has been organized as part of the Latin American Art department’s Annual Lecture Series.
